Luciano "Lou" Martinez
By Dr. Jaime A. Castellano,
HHRC Transition Coordinator
Former President John F. Kennedy once said, "Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country." This is the legacy that Luciano "Lou" Martinez leaves behind to the thousands of citizens whose lives he touched with his compassion, intelligence, and humor. In the twenty-two Hispanic cultures of the world death is a celebration of life. This is exactly what Luciano would have wanted us to remember. He is, nonetheless, an icon who will be dearly missed..
I know Luciano would not want us to lose sight of the mission and vision of his beloved Hispanic Human Resources Council, whose primary goal is to offer a world-class preschool education at an affordable cost to the cultural and linguistically diverse families of West Palm Beach. The preschool program is renowned and has consistently received local, state, and national awards and recognition. One simply has to walk into the offices on Congress and Georgia avenues to witness first hand the dozens of plaques, trophies, and certificates awarded HHRC. The entire Board of Directors is further committed to maintain the integrity, reputation, and purpose of this nonprofit organization.
HHRC is so many things to so many people. From a world-class preschool program to housing opponunities for first-time buyers; and from training senior citizens for employment to The Children's Fund, the legacy of Luciano Martinez lives on. We have shed the tears, tributes have been held, and some continue to mourn. Luciano would concur that the organization is bigger than anyone man. To this end, I challenge each one of you to live the legacy of Luciano. That is, ask not what others can do for you, but what you can do for others. This is the credo of HHRC, Inc. What better way to honor a great man.
